Post 304 - Piero Von Armin - Exclusively Yours / Local Boy

Piero Von Armin worked in theatre, film and TV. His only known TV credits was Alvin Purple (the series). Piero is probably best remembered by 1970s viewers for his featured part in the successful advertising campaign for “Uncle Sam's Miracle Herbal Hair Shampoo” and "Uncle Sam Deodorant". He also was in the Australian stage version of the Rocky Horror Show '74-'75. He did release one single for Festival Records in 1974 and here for you to download is "Exclusively Yours" b/w "Local Boy" (K-5651). It was produced by Martin Erdman at Festival's Studio 24 in Sydney. The A side was written by Ben Raleigh and Donald Wolf with the B side penned by Piero. Post 303 - Burton & Cunico - Strive, Seek, Find

This LP was voted "The Album Release of the Month" on the U.S FM Radio Report in 1974. We couldn't find a lot of info on this album so we emailed Ray and this is what he had to say......

Hi Garry, thanks for the HUGE compliment mate. I recorded the "Strive

Seek Find" album at Record Plant West in LA with Gino Cunico about

1000 years ago. . . ha ha.

All of the songs on this album were written by yours truly :-)

You may or may not know that Gino and I were previously both members

of "The Executives" from Australia.

Burton & Cunico, being primarily an acoustic duo, were around a long

before "unplugged" etc. was "in vogue".

We toured around the USA in a huge Winnebago Motor Home and played

live at all of the Universities, Colleges and local radio stations on

the West Coast and then a couple of months after that, we did the same

thing all over again on the East Coast of the USA.

If I remember rightly we toured through about 40 or so US states and

Probably drove 25,000+ miles {40,000 K's} through Big Town and Small

Town America. There were no digital cameras then so I took around 6000

slides of the trip. Sheesh, it's all so long ago and very hazy Gaz. My

mind boggles at all the places I have been 'n' seen in this ol' world,

especially the USA, Canada and Mexico. That's where the "Strive Seek

Find" concept comes from my friend. . . and . . . I'm still lookin'

for that perfect song . . . ha ha ha

Post 302 - James Freud - Step Into The Heat LP

Sadly it was reported that James Freud (Colin Joseph McGlinchey), the singer with Models, has taken his life in his Melbourne home this morning 4/11/10. Freud was noticeably absent when his band Models were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame last week. Sean Kelly commented that James “had fallen off the bike”. Freud was born Colin Joseph McGlinchey in June 29th, 1959. In his autobiography, Freud described his life as “not without a few old-fashioned rock’n’roll excesses”. He had a long-term battle with alcoholism. Freud was 16 when he started his first band "Sabre" with Models guitarist Sean Kelly. In 1977, he formed Teenage Radio Stars and had a hit with "Modern Girl" in 1979. After Mark Ferrie left Models in 1982, James joined his old mate Sean’s band. In 1985, Models, with Freud, had their greatest commercial breakthrough with the Freud penned "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" and "Barbados". He was with the band until the break-up in 1988. His next project was Beatfish with Mental As Anything’s Martin Plaza. In 2008, he released his solo album "See You In Hell". James had been sober since 2004 but Kelly’s comments that the ARIA Hall of Fame last week suggested that he had gone back to alcohol. Freud was 51. As a tribute to this great Aussie talent, here to download is James’s 1989 album for Mushroom "Step Into The Heat" (TVD 93302). It was produced by Bernard Edwards and James peened all the tracks. He is survived by wife Sally and sons Harrison and Jackson from the band Attack Of The Mannequins. R.I.P. James Freud 29/6/1959 - 4/11/10.

Another B side by request. This time it's the B side to post #55 "Mr Summer" by Skyhooks front man Shirley. "Song For A Friend" (K7285) was produced by Rick Formosa who co wrote the song with Shirl. It was released on Mushroom Records in 1978.

Post 299 - Jeff Phillips - The Wonderful World Of Jeff Phillips EP

Jeff Phillips is an Australian TV show host and pop singer. Originally from Perth, Western Australia, he first came to public attention when he took over as compeer of Perth TV show, Club 17 in 1966. Moving to Melbourne, he put out a number of single records, but the only one which charted was his cover version of The Shirelles, "Baby It's You" in 1968. He then became host of his own ABC-TV pop show, Sounds Like Us in 1970. That year saw him win the 1970 TV Week Awards - George Wallace Memorial Logie For Best New Talent. In 1971 he became host of the popular Saturday morning pop music show Happening '71. He continued on that show until 1973. After Happening's demise he went to the UK, where he was based for several years and released a number of singles including a version of John Paul Young's, "Yesterday's Hero". In the late '70s he re-located to Los Angeles for a time. He returned to Australia in 1985 to appear in the Australian production of Cats with Debra Byrne. Here to download is Jeff's only EP recorded on Festival Records in 1968 " The Wonderful World Of Jeff Phillips" (FX-11,585). He made a comeback in 1991, hosting the Ten Network TV talent show, Star Search. He had a long recording career, putting out nineteen singles from 1968 to 1981 on such labels as Festival, RCA, Generation, Havoc, U.A and Astor to name a few. There has never been an album release by Jeff which is a pity and I don't think there ever will be a best of sadly either because of too many record companies involvement.

Post 298 - William Shakespeare - Can't Stop Myself From Loving You LP

In November 1974, Shakespeare released his debut album, "Can't Stop Myself from Loving You" (475608 2) here for you to download, produced by Vanda & Young for Albert Productions. His second single, "My Little Angel" followed in December and peaked at #1 for three weeks in February 1975. Shakespeare appeared on teen orientated Countdown in his glam rock costume numerous times. The two singles and album were followed by two more singles, "Just the Way You Are" in April and "Last Night" in May 1976, but he had no further Top 50 charting successes. In 1975 Cave was convicted of carnal knowledge with a fifteen-year-old girl from his Melbourne fan club, he received two years probation. He left Albert Productions in 1977 and had no further recordings and his pop music career was over due to his conviction and changes in music styles. In 1978, Shakespeare, who had an alcohol addiction and clinical depression, was treated with Deep Sleep Therapy by Dr Harry Bailey at the Chelmsford Private Hospital for three weeks. From 1979 he performed as Billy Shake in Sydney clubs but generated little income. His alcoholism and mental health issues resulted in living on the street for several years until he was rescued by former Go-Betweens drummer Lindy Morrison who arranged accommodation and financial assistance for him. Today we say goodbye to William Shakespeare, may he finally find peace. RIP John Cave.

Update: William Shakespeare died from a heart attack. His funeral will be held in Sydney on Friday October 15, 2010.

Post 297 - Christie Allen - Under Lock And Key

Christie Allen was born, June Allen, on the 12th of September, 1954, in the United Kingdom, before moving with her family to Perth, Western Australia. Whilst performing in a band, Pendulum, with her brothers in Perth she came to the attention of songwriter and record producer Terry Britten after virtually knocking on his door, according to an interview she gave on Sounds. Britten, a former member of The Twilights, had previously worked with Cliff Richard with whom he co-wrote "Devil Woman". Impressed by Allen's vocal ability, he began working with her and a recording contract with Mushroom Records. She released her first single "You Know That I Love You", which although it wasn’t a major hit, did attract enough airplay and positive reviews to indicate bigger things to come. Her next three singles from her debut album "Magic Rhythm" were substantial hits. The first single was a ballad "Falling In Love With Only You", which reached #20 in April, 1979. Her next two singles were strongly influenced by the disco style - "Goosebumps" reached #3 in September, 1979, and "He's My Number One" reached #4 in 1980. With sales of 60,000,"Goosebumps" would be Allen's greatest success and was one of Mushroom Record's highest selling singles at that time. In 1980 & 1981 Christie released a three more singles - "Baby Get Away", "Switchboard" and "Don't Put Out The Flame" from her second and final album Detour, produced by John Hudson. Here to download is the B side of "Falling In Love With Only You" "Under Lock And Key" (K7400) which was a non album track. A long illness prevented her from adequately promoting her career and she subsequently retired. After starting a family, the 1990s saw Christie return to music, in a low profile performing as a vocalist with country music bands. In 1998 Michael Gudinski sought her out via an appeal on national radio to perform at a televised tribute concert for the 25th anniversary of Mushroom Records, and she retired following that performance on the 14th November, 1998. In 2006, Gudinski asked Christie to participate in the Countdown Spectacular tour, however due to her ill health, she had to decline. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2008 and died at her home in country Western Australia on Tuesday 12 August 2008, aged 53.

Post 296 - Ray Burgess - The Golden City / Rachel's Song

Australian musician and television presenter, Ray Burgess, shot to the top of Australia’s pop rock scene following a successful appearance on television’s talent show New Faces. In 1970 Ray soon became a founding member of Red Time, touring Australia for several years before the band was signed up as backing band to then King of Pop, Johnny Farnham. An accomplished singer in his own right, Ray undertook a solo career in 1974 and his first recording, "Touch Me", became a huge Australian hit. This success was confirmed by more hits, "Love Fever", "Sad Rock & Roll", "Rock & Roll Lightning" and, the one he will be most remembered for, "Gloria". Ray also recorded three albums. He was host of Rock & Roll Circus and then popular youth culture program, Flashez on ABC. Here to download is a single written & produced by Axiom's Don Mudie about Bendigo in Victoria, "The Golden City" b/w "Rachel's Song". Can't find out much more about this single as its only mentioned in one of my books as a release in 1981? as you will see in the scans there is no record label or cat. #. I'm starting to think maybe it was recorded for some celebration for Bendigo. Maybe someone out there will enlighten us. Ray penned the B side. Singer, musician, television presenter, host, MC and compére, after 40 years in Australia’s entertainment industry, Ray has a lot to offer. In 2008 Ray’s daughter, singer Casey Burgess, was hand picked from thousands of hopefuls to replace Charli Delaney in the hugely popular kid’s group, Hi-5.

Post 295 - Private - Like Her Daddy / In Our lives

Private once know as Private Lives were a Sydney band formed in 1985. As Private Lives the band issued 3 singles and a EP between 1983/84. As Private the band released 2 singles and a LP all in 1985. Here to download is their 2nd single "Like Her Daddy" b/w "In Our Lives" (104433) on RCA Records. Produced by guitarist Eddie Hansen & Private, both tracks were written by guitarist John Needham. Other members included were Phil Munro - bass, Alan Murphy - drums, Francisco Cordoza - percussion, Annatasia - vocals and Trudi Aspeling - vocals.

Post 294 - Cassi James - Which Way You Goin' Billy / Heaven Help The Girl

Carol Richards was a copy writer for radio 3UZ, as a freelancer and in advertising, copy and jingle writing. She worked as a professional solo singer all over the place and got her break when she joined Johnny Chester and Jigsaw under the name of Cassi James. She released a record here for you to download in 1971 "Which Way You Goin' Billy" b/w "Heaven Help The Girl" (FB-041). The A side was written by Terry Jacks who had a hit with this with his band The Poppy Family. The B side was penned and produced by Johnny Chester. I emailed Johnny to see if he could give me any info on Cassi this is the reply we got :-

Cassi James was a stage name selected for Carol Perlman who sang with my show for a year or so in the early '70's. As far as I know they were the only two songs she ever recorded. I did try to get her to take a similar path musically to Linda Ronstadt and embrace country music as well as rock'n'roll and big ballads as she had a mighty voice but it wasn't to be. Carol married and I've only ever seen her once since those days and that was in the early '90's. The last I heard she was still living in Melbourne but I don't know her married name or even if she is still married. I don't think she is still singing.

We emailed him back with what info we had on Cassi and he was grateful. and he also told us that the B side was recorded at the same session that he and Jigsaw did "Billy's Comin' Home For Christmas" (post # 196) at Armstrong’s demo studio. She re-married at 61 and has written three books. She once said that her most joyful achievement, satisfying beyond words, is and will always be, bringing my precious daughter into this world.

Post 293 - Captain Rock - I Do Love A Saturday Arvo / Can We Do It Again

Captain Rock recorded the original "Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees", as well as "Steamed Vegetables" from the album "Buried Treasure" in 1975. Captain Rock wasn’t a band but the dressed up name given to novelty songwriter Bob Brown. Another one of those artists that there is not a lot of info on. This single here for you to download "I Do Love A Saturday Arvo" b/w "Can We Do It Again" (FB 341) produced by David Williams & Greg Macainsh and the B side produced by David Fleet. The record was released on Fable but has no date but going by the cat # it would have to been around 1980/81.

Post 292 - Andy Upton - Stop In The Name Of Love / Born In A Taxi

Andy gained national recognition in the seventies through radio and TV appearances and enjoyed chart successes including a number one hit in Adelaide with his recording of "Stop In The Name of Love". The 5AD top 40 music chart certainly had some big artists competing for that No. 1 spot. In the early 60's, Andy's musical tastes were first influenced by "The Beatles" melodies and harmonies, and later by the "The Rolling Stones". Singing along to those early tracks it was evident that singing was what he wanted to do. In the mid 70's the ABC's Countdown, gave exposure to one of Andy's songs "Rainbow World" and achieved limited success. The ABC and Molly Meldrum were very supportive of Australian talent. Post 291 - Debutantes - Various Artist LP

The "Debutantes" LP in 1977 was the first 33 1/3 RPM of six new acts. If you lived in the South Eastern part of Australia you would have already seen Stiletto and The Sports live in concert. Others such as Mark Gillespie who lived in Yowrie N.S.W. and Adrian Hann a teacher, this LP presents their work for the first time. The last two acts Wayne Burt and Red Symons have been heard before on record as members of Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons and Skyhooks. The songs recorded for this album were the first solo recordings by these artists. Here to download is the LP "Debutantes" (OZS-1005). The album was engineered by John French with production by Ross Wilson, Red Symons, Adrian Hann and Wayne Burt.

Post 290 - Pattie - Gravitation / Let The Music Start

At 15, Little Pattie left Sydney Girl's High School to concentrate on her singing career. She scored three more hit singles during 1964 and made regular television appearances on shows like Bandstand, Saturday Date and Sing, Sing, Sing. In 1966, Pattie (having dropped the 'Little') toured Vietnam to entertain Australian troops. Despite assurances of absolute safety, at the tender age of 17 she found herself being evacuated from the beach at Long Tan, and returned home a changed (and more politically mature) person. Here to download is her 1969 single for Columbia "Gravitation" b/w "Let The Music Start" (DO-8694) it was produced by David McKay. In 1972 she played a leading role in the Australian Labor Party's It's Time campaign, which saw Gough Whitlam elected as the first Labor Prime Minister in 23 years. Although Patricia Amphlett tried in recent years to forge a career as an adult singer, she fell into a common fate for child stars, the public refused to let her grow up. Post 289 - All The Way Soundtrack LP

All the Way is an Australian television series made by Crawford Productions for the Nine Network in 1988. The series was set in the 1960s - the first episode took place on 22 November 1963 - and examined life for an Australian family during the decade of JFK, the Vietnam war, civil rights activism and The Beatles linked by three sisters (played by Diana Davidson, Maggie Millar and Rowena Wallace). A young Dannii Minogue also featured prominently in the cast. All the Way started out as a six-part mini-series before being extended to an ongoing series. However, it failed to catch on with audiences and was axed after 26 episodes. Here to download is the soundtrack album from the series "All The Way" (463256 1) on CBS Records. Artists that appear on this LP are Peter Chambers, Rick Price, Graham Matters and a host of others. Thanks to Peter S for this album.

Post 288 - Darryl Cotton - Can't Face The Music

On post #74 you will find the A side of this non LP track. The A side was "Don't Let It Get To You" which appeared on the album "Best Seat In The House". Darryl produced this side of the single which was released on Ross Wilson and Glenn Wheatley's Oz label, which issued the single in August 1978. Here to download is that B side "Can't Face The Music" (OZ-11774). As far as I can find out this track has never appeared on an album. Darryl performs regularly with the band Cotton Keays & Morris with fellow 1960s performers Jim Keays from The Masters Apprentices and Russell Morris. He has also performed and recorded with the Australian Youth Choir.

Post 287 - La De Das - You And Me

To me the La De Das often made their B sides as good if not better then the A side of some singles. An example is on post # 25 the B side of "Gonna See My Baby Tonight," "Fare Thee Well" which I have always thought was far better than the A side. With the follow up single "Morning Good Morning", the B side again was a great track written and sang by Phil Key who also sang the A side. Here to download is that B side "You And Me" (EA-9845). It was produced by Red Coe for His Master's Voice Records in 1972. Phil Key and bass player Peter Roberts left in October of 1972 to form Band of Light. After the split of Band of Light in 1975, Phil Key left the music business and spent several years living quietly, raising a family and working as a cab driver in Sydney. He died from a congenital heart condition in 1984.

Post 286 - Various - A Tribute to Rock Around The Clock

In 1977 to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the release of Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock," 2SM and its sister radio station 3XY in Melbourne and 4IP in Brisbane with the ANZ Bank commissioned the cream of Aussie talent to record this limited edition version. Together with Festival Records to salute the classic song, vocals were supplied by Glenn Shorrock, Graeme "Shirley" Strachan, John Paul Young, Daryl Braithwaite, Renee Geyer and Frankie J. Holden with Ol' 55. Here to download is that single "Rock Around The Clock" (SMX 46633) with the B side an introduction to how the record was put together with the voice of....I don't know but maybe someone does.

Post 285 - Fourth House - Swampy Crocodile

Actually there was no group called Fourth House. The vocals were by Wild Cherries / Virgil Brothers singer Danny Robinson and the backing was done by studio musicians. Danny, while visiting friend David McKay who was playing Jimmy Cliff's version of Cat Stevens "Wild World", on the spur of the moment decided to record a version also. Here to download is the B side of that single an instrumental penned by Hans Poulsen "Swampy Crocodile" (FB-035) on Fable Records, the A side was produced by David McKay so I can only guess he did this side as well but there are no production credets on the lable. Fourth House was not followed up with any other recording. Danny had retired by this time and had no interest in getting back into pop music.

Post 284 - Liv Maessen - Knock, Knock Who's There EP

Noted for her deep, resonant contralto voice, Melbourne singer Liv Maessen launched her career in 1969 when she entered the popular TV talent quest New Faces. The young mother of two won her heat and went on to take out second place in the series final. Her first single was a song called "The Love Moth". Released on the Polydor label in Dec. 1969, it scraped into the bottom end of the national Top 40 in April 1970, peaking at #39. Her second single, issued in April 1970, was a cover of Mary Hopkin's UK hit "Knock, Knock, Who's There". Liv's version was included in the first batch of singles released by Ron Tudor's new record company Fable Records and it quickly shot to the top of the charts. It became her most successful recording and one of the biggest Australian singles of the year. It stayed on the charts for 23 weeks and earned Liv the unique distinction of being the first Australian female singer ever to be awarded a Gold Record, for sales of over 50,000 copies. Her third single moved into the country pop genre with a rendition of Anne Murray's US hit "Snowbird". It made the national Top 20, but this proved to be her last chart hit. In March 1971 she released her fourth single, "Hurry On Down", which sold only moderately and didn't chart. Here to download is the 1970 EP "Knock, Knock Who's There" (FBE 1) arranged by John Farrar. In 1974 Liv released a new single on the Philips label, "Hey Mama, Sing Me A Song" which was apparently her last commercial recording. Nothing is currently known about what Liv is doing these days.

Post 283 - Johnny "Aldo" Lockwood - No. 96 / In My Deli

Johnny Lockwood was born on 7th of December 1920 in London. He is an Australian-based actor and comedy performer, possibly best known for his role in the 1970's television soap opera Number 96, playing Aldo Godolfus. Lockwood came to Australia in 1957 for a ten-week run with the Tivoli Theatre circuit, however after that job finished he remained in Australia for five years. Returned to the UK to play Fagin in Lionel Bart's Oliver! at the New Theatre but once that run finished Lockwood followed his yearnings and returned permanently to Australia. Lockwood spent a year with television series Sunnyside Up then went to the U.S. to perform in Las Vegas and returned to Australia for a two-year run with classic comedy series The Mavis Bramston Show. The role in Number 96 followed in 1972. Lockwood was an original cast member of the series and his character, bumbling Jewish proprietor Aldo Godolfus, was one of the show's most well known and recognised figures. The character was killed off in a dramatic revamp of the series - the infamous bomb blast storyline - in September 1975. Here to download is a single Johnny recorded in the Number 96 period as did Abigail, Joe Hasham and Pat McDonald and Ron Shand. The single was released in 1972 on Banner Records "No. 96" b/w "In My Deli" (BNK-4909). It was penned by Clyde Collins with the B side penned by Collins & Sandy Garrick. The record was produced by Sandy Garrick at Festival Studios Sydney. In the early 2000's Lockwood continued to make television and film appearances including roles in Moulin Rouge! And miniseries The Potato Factory.

Post 282 - Jackie Rice - Leave It Alone / I Only Need A Friend

Jackie Rice vocalist with Mr. George released a single in 1984 on M.O. Records. There’s not a lot on information about Jackie or this recording out there unfortunately. The 5th edition of the Who's Who Of Australian Rock only says "Leave It Alone" 1984. Both tracks were written by Jackie. The single was produced by Brian King and engineered by Martin Benge. Here to download is the single "Leave It Alone" b/w "I Only Need A Friend" (MOS-1365). 

Post 281 - Normie Rowe - Piano Man LP

Normie Rowe was born Norman John Rowe on 1 February 1947. He was the pre-eminent male solo star of Australian music in the 1960s. Known for his bright, edgy tenor voice and dynamic stage presence, many of Rowe's most successful recordings were produced by Pat Aulton, house producer for the Sunshine Records, Spin Records and Festival Records labels. Backed by his band The Playboys, Rowe released a string of Australian pop hits on the Sunshine Records label that kept him at the top of the charts and made him the most popular solo performer of the mid-1960s. Normie's double sided hit "Que Sera Sera" b/w "Shakin' All Over" was one of the most successful Australian singles of the 1960s. Between '65 and '67 Normie was Australia's most popular male star but his career was cut short when he was drafted for compulsory military service in late 1967. He was discharged from the army in February 1970. His Vietnam experiences left a deep impression on him, and since that time he has worked extensively on behalf of other Vietnam veterans. Normie had one last minor hit in May 1970 with the song "Hello", written by Johnny Young, and he released an album of the same name. It was revealed many years later that Young's song "Smiley", a major hit for Ronnie Burns in 1969, was written about Normie. Unfortunately, his national service stint had effectively ended his pop career, and Normie was never able to recover the momentum and mass popularity he lost because of being enlisted. In his absence, Ronnie Burns and Johnny Farnham had taken over and Farnham was now the new King of Pop. The strong anti-war sentiment of the period affected him, and like many Vietnam vets, Normie suffered considerably because of his service, and regrettably, many people took out their anger about the war on veterans. Normie himself has said that he was treated like a pariah by the very people who had been buying his records and screaming at his concerts. Normie remained a popular attraction at clubs, corporate functions and on the rock & roll revival circuit in the 1990s. Here to download from 1985 is his LP "Piano Man" (HAM 123) on Hammard Records. Normie's most recent album, Missing In Action, includes his own version of "Smiley".

Post 280 - The Big Steal Soundtrack LP

The Big Steal is a 1990 Australian film directed by Nadia Tass starring Ben Mendelsohn, Claudia Karvan and Steve Bisley. In his first leading role Ben Mendelsohn plays Danny Clark, a bumbling eighteen-year-old guy. He knows what it takes to be cool and have some style, it's just that he seems to struggle to get there. Danny has enthusiasm and passion and only wants two things more than anything in the world. A Jaguar XJ6 and a date with the gorgeous Joanna Johnson (an early role for then 17-year old Claudia Karvan). The film won the Best Screenplay (David Parker & Max Dann), Best Original Music Score (Phil Judd) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Steve Bisley) and was nominated for 6 more Awards at the Australian Film Institute (AFI) for 1990. The Music was by Chris Gough and Philip Judd. "The Big Steal" (90317 2571-2) was released in 1990 on WEA and is here for you to download. Post 279 - The Best Of Whisky A Go Go - Autumn & Barrie McAskill with Levi Smith’s Clefs

Autumn were regulars at Sydney's legendary Whisky A-Go-Go nightclub in Kings Cross. Around the time that their album came out, Autumn was also featured on one side of a Chart EP shared with Barrie McAskill with Levi Smith's Clefs, called "The Best of Whisky A-Go-Go". The Autumn tracks were "Day Tripper" and "By The Time I get to Phoenix", both of which were also included on their LP "Song To Raymondo". This rare EP is now a very valuable item, and copies in top condition fetch around $200 on the collector's market! Here to download is that EP "The Best Of Whisky A Go Go" (CHX-11,744) on Chart Records in 1970 and engineered by Richard Batchens. I recently found this EP to buy, but thanks to Peter who had it in his collection, I have now saved $135.00, and I'm sure Mrs. Ozzie thanks him more.

Post 278 - Mr George - On The Bandwagon LP

Here's another one of those Aussie bands that we can't find a lot of information about. Formed in Sydney in 1973, releasing 3 singles and 1 LP and here for you to download is "On The Bandwagon" (6357 019) on Philips Records in 1974. The band included Alan Daniels - guitar, George Fisher - bass, Norm Irwin - vocals, Richard Kett - drums, Barry Rice - guitar and Jackie Rice - vocals. According to the 5th edition of The Who's Who Of Australian Rock these members didn't come from any other band or didn't go to any other band, so it looks like Mr. George was their only project. Apart from the Ted Mulry written hit "So Much Love In My Heart", there's also another Ted Mulry song "My Temperature's High". Also included in this album is a cover of Otis Redding's classic "Dock Of The Bay". The band also contribute several original songs. The album was recorded at United Sound Sydney and produced by Rod Thomas. One of Mr. George's greatest claims to fame is that they were support for the David Cassidy tour here in the early 70's. Maybe some of the band members or their friends of band members may see this post and contact us with some more information on the band. As we have found out in the past, you just don't know who's checking you out in cyber space.

Post 277 - Autumn - Mr.Henry's Lollipop Shop / Today

In 1969 Autumn were able to impress EMI sufficiently to be able to record their debut single "Mr Henry's Lollipop Shop", which came out on EMI's Columbia late in the year. It's apparent that, like most new bands of that period, Autumn was probably not given much say in what they recorded, and EMI certainly had a track record of foisting ultra-poppy material on new bands, as evidenced by the bubblegum material that their label mates The Flying Circus was obliged to record for their first two Singles. The single didn't chart, and EMI didn't pick up the option for further recordings. Autumn then switched to a newly established Sydney independent label Chart, a move that proved timely for the band. Autumn's first single for Chart was a cover of Christie's "Yellow River". Autumn released three more singles on Chart. "Looking Through the Eyes of a Beautiful Girl" Nov. 1970 was a major hit in Sydney, where it reached #3, and it made #23 nationally. It was followed by the catchy "She Works in a Woman's Way", originally recorded by Edison Lighthouse. On this track, Autumn acted as the backing band for popular Sydney TV and cabaret singer Dave Allenby. It charted well in Sydney in '71. Their final single for Chart was "Miracles" b/w "Lady Anne", issued in March 1971. It was followed by their debut LP Song to Raymondo. The album is a collection of hits, covers and originals that indicates the eclectic nature of the group's repertoire. During the second half of 1971 Autumn released an EP "A Patch Of Autumn" (post #242) followed by their hugely underrated second album "Comes Autumn". (which Aztec Music will be reissuing very soon) Their first Warner single,” Falling" in May 1971 became their fourth hit, reaching #10 in Sydney. Their next single "Goblin's Gamble" in July and their last Warners single "Just Couldn't Believe It" in September both failed to chart. Autumn also featured on one side of a Chart EP shared with Levi Smith's Clefs, called The Best of Whisky A-Go-Go. Post 276 - Jim Keays' Southern Cross - Undecided / For Someone

Keays formed Jim Keays' Southern Cross with Rick Brewer (ex-Zoot) on drums, Rex Bullen (Bakery) on keyboards, George Cross (Clydehouse) on bass and Mick Elliot on guitar. They reworked, "Undecided" which was issued as a single for CBS Records in December 1975, by then the line up had changed to Peter Laffy ( Fox) on guitar, Ron Robinson on bass guitar and John Swan (Fraternity) on drums. Post 275 - Carol Lloyd Band - The Singles

Carol Lloyd left Railroad Gin in August '75 for a solo career. She put together the band Tonnage, soon to become the Carol Lloyd Band. They released the LP "Mother Asleep At The Wheel" for EMI which produced two singles "Storm In My Soul" b/w "Blue MacKenzie" (EMI-11121) Dec. '76 produced by Colin Peterson, and "All The Good Things" b/w "Don't Do Me Any Favours" (EMI-11248) non album track, May '77 produced by Mike Vidale & Clive Shakespeare. She issued a solo LP in 1980 "Take It Or Leave It" which released the single "Take It Or Leave It" b/w "Naked City" (103711) produced by Colin Peterson & Peter Jones for RCA. Here to download are all those singles. These days Carol Lloyd is justifiably proud of what she achieved during those years with Railroad Gin and The Carol Lloyd Band. She has more than earned her place in Australian rock history. Thanks to Peter for these singles.

Post 274 - Frankie J Holden & Wilbur Wilde - Are On The Prowl LP

Take two legends of Australian rock and roll who also just happen to be legends of television shows like "In Melbourne Tonight" and "Hey Hey It's Saturday", put them on stage with a great band, and you have the recipe for a superb, crowd pleasing concert. Doing what they do best, Frankie and Wilbur will have you dancing and singing along to the hit songs of OL’55 and other Rock 'n' roll classics. Frankie & Wilbur have assembled a great rock 'n' roll outfit for this LP. The songs chosen are fron their live shows. The album was recorded at Woodstock Studios Melbourne 2004. the band was made up of Freddie Strauks - drums (Skyhooks,The Sports, Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons and the Ol' Skydaddys), Paul Gadsby - bass (The Grassroots band, Uncle Bill, Men At Work/Colin Hay and Paul Kelly), Pip Joyce - Guitar (Bwana), Stewart Wilkinson - Keyboards/guitar. With help from Joe Camilleri and Engineer Robin Mai. Here to download is the album "Are On The Prowl" oddly enough there is no cat.# or record label on this album. In 2009 Holden also co-presents, with his wife Michelle, "Discover Downunder", a half-hour Australia based travelling/caravanning program for the Nine Network. Wilde starred as T.V. Evangelist "Brother Jacob" in Pittot Films' thriller "City of the Damned" which is due for release late 2010.

Post 273 - Moscos and Stone - Singles Collection

In early '77 Laurie Stone left Railroad Gin to record his solo album "Life's A Carnival" which appears to have never been released. He produced singles for Brisbane bands such as Wickety Wak, Moonlight and Chicks Inc before teaming up with ex-Sect/Burke & Wills guitarist Peter Moscos. The two released two great albums "Moscos & Stone" 1979 and our favourite "Memorial Drive" 1980. The two also released six singles. Here for you to download from our friend Peter are those six singles and their B sides. 3 of the B sides were non album tracks as well as one A side. As a bonus we have included a song that also was never on any of their albums "C'mon Radio" which came from the album "That's Queensland" compilation album, 1979. Stone went on to composing and producing music for film and TV. One of his most memorable was the theme for the TV drama "Flying Doctors". In the early 90's his soundtrack work took him to L.A. Sadly in 2003 Peter died of cancer.

Post 272 - Footy Favourites (Victoria) LP

Following the release of the N.S.W Footy Favourites LP, Victoria released their album in 1981 on Studio One Records. Here your football stars sing their favourite hits. The album was engineered by John French and recorded at Flagstaff Studios West Melbourne, and remixed a EMI Sydney. The vocal production was by Gene Pierson and Peter Cuppies. Contributing to this album are Tim Watson (Essendon), Trevor Barker (St.Kilda), Ray Shaw (Collingwood), Wayne Schimmelbusch (North Melb.), Barry Round (South Melb.), David Cloke (Richmond), Michael Turner (Geelong), Laurie Serafini (Fitzroy), Mark Maclure (Carlton), Michael Moncrieff (Hawthorn), Robert Flower (Melbourne) and Kelvin Templeton (Footscray). Post 271 - Footy Favourites (N.S.W.) LP

Tooth's Hotels presented this LP in 1981 of the N.S.W. RFL football players singing their favourite songs. The LP was produced by Peter Hood for Studio One Records and mixed at Atlantic Studios, Sydney. The players who performed on this album are Peter Walsh & Brian Cook (Western Suburbs), Eric Grothe (Parramatta), Ken Wolffe (Penrith), Mitch Brennan (St.George), Chris Luckman (North Sydney), John Gray (Manly), Lloyd Martin (Balmain), Joe Reaiche (Eastern Suburbs), Steve Gearin (Canterbury), Joe Squadrito (South Sydney), Jim Walters (Newtown) and Greg Cox (Cronulla). Here to download is the album "Footy Favourites" (SO 801). All the players appear by kind permission of their respective clubs and the RFL Football player’s liaison: Wayne Thomas. A percentage of the sales of this album was donated to The Spastic Centre.

Post 270 - Moz - Save Me / Single Word

Peter Moscos was born in 1948 and was one of the members of The Sect and Burke and Wills (see post #266). With Laurie Stone they formed Moscos & Stone and released two great albums “Moscos & Stone” 1979 and “Memorial Drive” 1980. Peter worked behind the scenes and wrote songs for many Australian artists and TV productions. His partner Laurie Stone was a member of the Carol Lloyd Band and Railroad Gin. Here to download is a single he released on MOZ under the name of Moz "Save Me" b/w "Single Word" (HAP 0101). There is no release date on the label or much information anywhere on this single. Peter died in 2003 of cancer. Thanks to our good friend Peter for this single.

Post 269 - Johnny Farnham - Sings The Big Hits Of '73 Live! LP

John Peter Farnham, formerly billed as Johnny Farnham, was born on the 1st of July 1949 in Dagenham, England. He was a teen pop idol from 1964–1979, and since then he has forged a career as an adult contemporary singer. His career has mostly been as a solo artist but he replaced Glenn Shorrock as lead singer of Little River Band during 1982–1985. In September 1986 his solo single, "You're the Voice" peaked at No. 1 on the Australian singles charts. The associated album, Whispering Jack, held the No. 1 position for a total of 25 weeks, and is the highest-selling album in Australian history. Here to download is his 1973 LP "Sings The Big Hits Of '73 Live!" (EMC 2506) on EMI. It was recorded live at Armstrong's Studios on the 29th of September 1973. The album was produced by Peter Dawkins and arranged by Geoff Hales. Unfortunately it doesn't credit any of the musicians that backed John on this album, but from the sound of the album it would have been a pretty long list.

Post 268 - Brian Cadd & Adam Harvey - Rockin' The Country

Back in 1998 when I was working at FM 107.5 in Orange, we received an NfS radio sampler CD of upcoming releases country singles for radio each month. On #45 was this single, here for you to download, "Rockin' The Country". After a listen I liked it, and being a Brian Cadd fan, I thought I'd give it some air play. At that time I didn't know who Adam Harvey was but at first listen thought he was a bit like Elvis. I played it every show in the following weeks and got a great response. People liked it and wanted to buy it. A friend of mine that worked in a record bar was receiving enquiries to purchase this single nearly every day but she couldn't find a release date on either artist. I contacted the woman that was on the paper work from NfS and she told me that Warner was the company that was going to release it. She also asked me to fax her feedback of how popular it was and how people wanted to purchase it. She planned to take it to a meeting with the Warner executives and maybe get a release date. That was the last I heard from her and the single. To my knowledge it has never been released and never appeared on either artist’s albums. I have tried to contact Brian and Adam but as yet haven't received an answer from either of them. So it’s still a bit of a mystery. I have no catalogue number, B side, or any other info for this single. I always thought it should have been released and it would have sold around here by the response that I got. Maybe someone out there can enlighten us. Have a listen and see what you think.

Post 267 - Burke & Wills - Thank You / Sunshine / Come Along With Me / Janine

Here to download are the two singles from Burke & Wills who were the backing band for Frieze (Darryl Cotton & Beeb Birtles), after they made the move from Brisbane to Melbourne. The band was made up of Warren Adams bass & vocals, Peter Moscos (The Sect, Moscos & Stone) guitar & vocals and Jamie Dunn drums & vocals who became much more famous providing the voice of the popular Bathmat called Agro in the 80's, as well as doing a LP and a few singles. Here to download are Burke & Wills only two singles recorded for Image Records "Thank You" b/w "Sunshine" (IS-134) and "Come Along With Me" b/w "Janine" (IS-141) both out of 1973. Post 266 - Sinclair Brothers - The Singles

On post # 104 we posted the Sinclair Brother's great album "Two Moons". Unfortunately they never did another LP but they did do a couple of singles after the album. They gave us 4 singles all up with the last two not on the "Two Moons" LP. There was also a B side that was a non album track as well. All the singles were recorded on Infinity and produced by Martin Erdman. The singles in this collection are "Yesterfool" b/w "Jenny", "Love Me Like I love You" b/w "Leavin'", "It Must Be Autumn" b/w "Lingering Tones", "City Boy" b/w "Trains" Thanks to Peter for these gems.

Post 265 - Jo Beth Taylor - A Prayer For Jane / Chances

Jo Beth Taylor born Joanne Guilfoyle on May 29th, 1971 in Perth, Australia. She began singing when she was 5 years old, and at the age of 13 began performing professionally when she started her career with the television program Perth's Young Entertainers. When she was 17 she joined a band named Street Cafe and played regularly around Perth. Band member Alan Laguda was originally from Melbourne and talked Jo and the band and crew into moving to Melbourne. Where Jo recorded a demo tape, which found its way into the hands of Molly Meldrum, who immediately signed her to Melodian records. In 1990 Taylor toured with Indecent Obsession as the support act for Debbie Gibson. The two became firm friends and Gibson invited Taylor to go to New York, where she then lived for a year. Gibson wrote and produced 5 tracks on her debut album 99 Reasons. Taylor began a pop career in the early 1990s, releasing the single 99 Reasons in 1991. The song hit the Australian Top 40, peaking at #31. Taylor's debut album was also titled "99 Reasons", but was not a chart success. "You Don't Own Me" was released as the 2nd single, whilst 1993 also saw the release of the song here for you to download, "A Prayer For Jane" b/w "Chances" (D12116). The lyrics of the song were about a friend of Taylor's who committed suicide. The song failed to make the Australian Top 50 charts, peaking at #61. The A side was written by Steve Kipner and John L. Parker and was produced by the two and recorded at Steve's studio. The B side was penned by Jo Beth and Jamie Jardine. Jo Beth was also known for hosting three weekly programs on the Nine Network at the same time between 1993 and 1997: Australia's Funniest Home Video Show, What's Up, Doc? and Hey Hey It's Saturday before suffering from a nervous breakdown and disappearing from television for more than two years. She returned to television in 2000 as the host of Star Struck, another Nine Network program, which was to be her last role until Dirty Jobs in 2007. She only released one album and four singles, all of which failed to crack the Top 30 ARIA Chart.
