Post 188 - The Hawking Brothers - The Melbourne Cup / Eumerella Shore

The Hawking Brothers are renowned for their impeccable harmonies and acoustic instrument ability. Russ born 1931 and Alan 1933 formed a hugely successful band from a background of live radio shows with The Hillbilly Club and Melbourne Trailblazers. They had a abundant recording career dating from as early as 1955 when they first recorded for Regal Zonophone. In 1975 they toured Canada and the U.S and became the only Australian band to play America's Grand Ole Opry. When Russ died in 1976, the band continued under Alan's direction. They disbanded in 1980 with Alan going solo until his death in 1988.The Hawking Brothers won Golden Guitars in 1974 and 1978.They produced many hits. Here to download is their 1973 single on Fable "The Melbourne Cup" b/w "Eumerella Shore" (FB-196). I thought this was fitting today as The Melbourne Cup, the race that stops the nation, took place today. Congratulations to Shocking the horse that powered home in the final straight, giving jockey Corey Brown his first Melbourne Cup victory.
