4IP radio DJ Graham "Robbo" Roberts recorded this
novelty song dedicated to one of Australia's most favourite weekend pastimes
the “Barbie”. Both sides of this single was penned by the late John Vincent and
produced by Waynie "Poo" Roberts, Geoff Mullins, and Russ Britton for
Philips Records in 1975. On the B side Graham is joined by Paul J. Turner And
The 4IP Gang. It seems the single only charted in Brisbane. Chart entry date was 31 Oct 1975 it peaked at
26 for 7 weeks. It didn’t chart in any other capital city. Here to download is
that single “Havin A Barbie” b/w “Rock And Roll DJ” (6037 066 2).

I didn't know about this version. I first discovered Rock and roll dj by Ronnie Sparks and the 2SM Good Guys in a mates collection years ago (that later turned up on the Glenn A Baker/Bob Hudson's Atipodean Atrocities album). The B-side was called Back yard barbie boogie woogie blues by Greg Rees and the 2SM Good Guys. The year was 1974. Both songs are currently on youtube. There is a comment that says that Graham Roberts was at 2SM in 1974 and then went to 4IP the following year where he released his version. Both instrumental backings are exact.
